The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Project type

Arts Development, Engagement

Location

Gateshead, UK

Located in a redundant Rank Hovis flour mill and sitting on the ‘wrong’ side of the River Tyne, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art made up one half of a huge arts-led (alongside The Glasshouse, formerly known as Sage Music Centre) investment programme to affect the dynamic, ground-breaking regeneration of Gateshead City.

James worked with the Baltic’s in-house executive to develop and launch the project and its particular emphasis on the importance of artist-public relationships and the role of the development as a community hub that would encourage participation and engagement.

Anish Kapoor’s striking pre-opening installation Taratantara - a bright-red trumpet-shaped installation of 50m of PVC suspended within the shell of the mill made international headlines.
